Chapter One: Fighter's Soul
(Part One)
.....The monsters closed in around Erika as she knelt in the snow. Their howling and snuffling did not intimidate her in the slightest as she knelt, her black cloak rippling out around her. A sword hilt made its presence known by a jagged bulge in the side of her cloak, and as she stood to acknowledge the beasts, its jewel-encrusted hand-and-a-half hilt shone in the bright wintry sunlight. The monsters came closer, eager to taste her flesh, to tear her to shreds, and she knew it.
.....In fact, it made her smile.
.....The bravest, or perhaps most foolhardy beast, a werewolf, came within striking distance of where Erika stood and bared its fangs in a gutteral growl, claws poised for attack. An attack that never came, for Erika had decided to fight. The creature's arms fell to the ground after a quick flurry of her magnificent sword, and another lunge cut the werewolf in half. As it fell, the other monsters were uncertain. This snack suddenly seemed less worthwhile to them.
.....Erika gave them no chance to withdraw, now set on the fight as she was. Her 3 1/2 foot sword, gleaming with her first kill's blood, arced towards its new enemies with deadly accuracy, cutting through bone and sinew like wet paper as Erika fought. The monsters knew fear then, staring into the amber eyes of this swordmaiden as she advanced toward them, her blade dripping with their allies' blood and gore. She paused and smiled at the remaining few, flicking some of the mess onto the snow. They fled then. All but one.

I was told once that I wasn't good enough.

For anything.

I spat in their face and underwent the same things that they themselves were afraid to do, and made it through unscathed.

Only you define your limits.

Fighter's Soul
(Part Two)
.....This beast had seen many battles, and knew well that the focus of the combatants can change the course of the fight. Erika watched the monsters flee and felt a rush of triumphant happiness in her chest.
.....That was soon replaced by agonizing pain, and she looked down to see the arm of another werewolf protruding from her chest, covered in her blood. She closed her eyes and started to scream-
.....-only to sit up in bed, her scream shattering the night's quiet. She panted, clutching her chest, trying to shake the nightmare from her mind.
.....Her heart pounded against her ribs as she sat, and a voice, her father's, asked softly at the door, "Erika? Is everything alright, hon?"
.....After a short pause, she replied, "Yeah. Just had another nightmare."
....."The usual one?"
....."Yes." Erika sighed, her heart calmer now. She brushed a strand of her red hair out of her face. "The same one I've been having since I started training." She looked over at her sword, nowhere near as beautiful as the one in her dream, leaning against the wall.
....."Well, don't worry about it, hon. The Choosing is in a few hours, and then you'll know if your training has paid off. In the meantime, I'm going to try to go back to sleep. Love you."
....."Love you, too, dad." She heard him walk down the hall to his bedroom, then heard his door open and close. She closed her eyes, dropping her head back onto her pillow, and slowly let the air out of her lungs in a long sigh.
....."Let's hope you're right," she said to her ceiling. "I don't know how many more of those nightmares I can take."
.....Eventually, she managed to fall sleep again, readying for tomorrow. For the Choosing.
