Get this (http://smealum.github.io/3ds/) under "preparing your SD card" before watching:
If you get homebrew, the next update will most-likely remove homebrew, if that's what you mean. I'm pretty sure you can't brick it.

you will need a pc
1. Get Tubehax/Ironhax/Ninjahax, you NEED homebrew for this.
2. Download Custom Home Menu Manager http://puu.sh/jFrX9/6cd441855e.rar
3. Extract the files with WinRAR or something
4. Put the CHMM in SD:/3ds/ (the 3ds folder should be there if you successfully installed tubehax/ironhax)
5. Put the boot.3dsx file in the root of your SD card, replace it if it asks you.
6. After that, create a "Themes" folder on the root of your SD card.
7. Go to the selected theme you downloaded and open it with WINrar
8. Extract the whole folder (not the contents) to your "Themes" folder on the root of your SD card (if there's no folder in the RAR archive, make one in the themes folder and put the .bin, .bcstm, and [optional] .png in the folder you just created)
9. Eject SD card from PC, turn on 3DS, make your theme the default white, launch homebrew
10. Scroll all the way down to the CHMM app (no icon i know) and launch it
11. Choose a theme, press A, then start once it's done.
12. Exit homebrew (start, then A) and it should be there.
