Evil
xXAliveXx (2015-01-03 23:42:25)Her eyes open, and the first thing she thinks is smoke.
Her nostrils burn, and she rolls away, stopping and moaning when a sharp pain digs into her back. Her eyes adjust to the gloom and she looks around where she lay on the ground. There was smoke everywhere, things still burning.
Where was she? And...who was she?
She fights off the pain in her back and sits up, turning to look below her. She sat upon a sheet of metal, covered in a dark red coating she hoped was rust. Around her was a clearing, scattered bits of metal thrown carelessly on the ground and bits of what looked like people splattered on the concrete.
Fighting the urge to throw up, the girl reaches behind her and feels her back. There's nothing here, even though it feels like someone was stabbing her with a knife, so she stands.
From here, she gets a good look beyond her little clearing. The smoke columns went on for miles, things everywhere burning. She coughed into her hand, then looked around. She saw a path emerge beneath the carnage, a sidewalk. Around her were the burnt out husks of houses, the property lines blurred by the fire.
She tried to walk, but her first step resulted in her breaking something. She looked down and lifted her foot away. There lay what was left of a lightbulb, the glass broken in and the shape gone. The girl looked at her shoes, a pair of black converse, and then got a good look at herself for the first time. She wore a simple white t-shirt, stained by what looked like car oil and sweat, and a pair of jeans that were ripped near the bottom. She reached up and felt her hair, of all things, and frowned at how matted it felt.
She stepped again, looking for a path through the garbage, and this time kept going. Her back made a strange popping noise after a minute or two and she stopped to let the pain pass. She took the moment to look around. The smell of smoke still hung heavy in the air, and she noticed that here there was less trash, as if it had been swept away by something.
Her stomach rumbled, and she was faced with a new, unwelcome pain. Hunger.
Something moved behind her, and the girl turned just in time to see a giant sheet of metal come crashing down from a pile of garbage. At the top of the pile was a creature made of what looked like metal and bones. It moved, and the gears in its head shifted her way. She gasped, and the entire thing turned to her.
She wondered if it meant to hurt her, and then it flashed its teeth, a mixture of sharp bones and jagged metal bits, and she ran.
Her back cried out in agony as she forced herself to go faster, but she ignored it, to scared to risk stopping. She could hear it's giant, metallic feet crash onto the ground and follow her, gaining speed over the unstable ground.
She was having trouble finding a place to put her feet, and soon the scrap became too deep to walk through without climbing, so that's exactly what she stared doing.
The creature, however, had no trouble gliding over the rusty pieces of metal and human remains to get to her, and it reached its bony head up to her foot.
She kicked at it, but her foot connected with a metal plate on its head and pain shot up her leg. It reached for her with a foot, a ghastly assortment of grinding gears and clacking bones, and she thought to herself, this is how I die...
Suddenly, she was swept off the pile of junk, straight down, under the creature and sliding out behind it, onto the pavement.
She opened her eyes, amazed, and stood, looking down at her feet. There was a rope around one of them, where she'd acquired it unknown, and it tugged, pulling her sideways. She ran with it so she wouldn't fall, and squeezed herself in between two of the junk piles.
The creature had noticed her leave, and saw her only as she was leaving. It growled, a sound like a jar of nails shaken violently, and it threw it self at her.
She screamed and squeezed in faster, scraping her arms on the sides of the pile. The creature slammed into the mound and began to growl louder. It's foot worked to reshape itself, getting thinner and thinner, until it was skinny enough to fit into the hole. He girl was mesmerized as she watched it, all of the gears going to work, little rods flicking here and there to change it, but when the thing stuck its paw in, she ran again.
She pulled free just as the creatures foot scraped her jeans, not able to reach any farther.
She could hear it growl and moan on the other side of the pile, frustrated, and heard it start to climb over.
A hand grabbed her shoulder and spun her around, and she looked at the face of a young boy.
"Sorry bout the rope," he said, "but I had to getcha out of there somehow. Come on, we gotta go before he gets over the pile." The boy untied her foot and ran, half leading, half pulling her along.
They rounded a corner and he dashed into a hole in the ground. The girl stopped, reluctant, and looked behind them. The creature had just passed over the top, and it howled when it saw her.
Her heart gave a little jump, and she crawled in after the boy. She reached the bottom, the ladder dropping them three feet from the ground, and it was dark.
It was considerably cooler down here, and the girl shivered, cold after all the excitement. A light lit up right next to her face, and she jumped, turning to see the boy.
"Looks like you just woke up." He stuck out a hand, his fingers bandaged in places and his palm covered in rust. "I'm Sam."
The girl shook his hand, then spoke, choking on her first words. "I don't...don't know my...my name."
"You usually don't at first, but it'll come to you." Sam pulled his hand back and turned away from her. "Follow me. I'll introduce you to the others."
"There...are more of us?" She asked.
"Of course there are, no way could we be the only ones." Sam started walking, and the girl followed him.
"How many of you are there?" The girl asked.
"Only five of us...six, now that you're here."
The girl felt something splash against her feet, but kept walking, because Sam was.
"Sorry about the water. Usually we try to avoid it, but it's impossible here. We have to cross, but we'll be out soon." Sam said.
True to his word, Sam lead the girl out of the water soon, and she was relived to find that her socks had only gotten a bit wet on the bottom.
"We don't have a long way to go, but we should rest here. I can hear you breathing hard, so we'll just stop for a while."
The girl thanked Sam, then sat down. She asked him when she was comfortable, "so...what happened?"
Sam smiled, his little teeth crooked, "I don't really know. That's the thing, miss, none of us remember."
"I love your eyes...but only with ketchup."
