Think about it. Almost all of the newcomers are being harassed by multiple veterans. Take these examples.

Chrom was sparring with his daughter, taking some sweet gameplay shots, the usual stuffs. Robin was running late for the occasion.
Out of nowhere, a maniac drives his futuristic a** sportscar through the arena and jumps out, then just wrecks Chrom with a flaming-bird-punch. Then when the daughter tries to protect her father, she almost gets her face neudered. Thank god Robin is always fashionably late... but WHAT THE HELL DID CAPTAIN FALCON HAVE TO GAIN FROM THIS?

Next, Megaman was just standing there thinking about the partnership with Nintendo. He saw them fighting and was all, "Oh maybe I should put on a helmet."
He jumped down the hill to break the fight up, but when they saw him he knew he was next so he panicked and threw some razor-sharp blades as a warning. No harm done, right? But no, he had no savior and got jumped.

Shulk was out grinding in the woods, looking for some high level big monsters to beat, just an average Tuesday. He sees Bowser terrorizing a butterfly and shows him what for. Link (wtf bruh, he should do some yoga 4 anger management), and Marth (why is he in the woods with Link?), both just indiscriminately leap out and try to kill an u familiar humanoid figure without hesitation.

I think they all just got together and thought, "You know what? Let's get the freshman!"

It's boredom induced speculation. Think about it though, most character reveals show several characters teaming up against a newcomer. It seems as though the joke wasn't funny went over your heads.
