Is he transferring downloaded game files on his 3ds and transferring them to a microSD chip and putting it in a 3ds cartridge adapter then playing them? Good idea, but it has some bad sides. MicroSD cards are EASY to lose.

Cons:
You can't save a game state (.sav) unless you get off-product devices.
You need specific Gigabyte Micro SD cards to save the game (.rom) into the chip.
