HarmoKnight Not as Harmonic as Expected
rayword45 (2013-03-15 09:20:07)I'm not going to prejudge your review because I haven't even played the demo and I'm not a big fan of Pokemon.
I am however INCREDIBLY intrigued by your claims of demanding timing windows.
Would you be so kind as to try this game out quickly? Adjust for offset if necessary and see if you can get all Perfects on an easy song (which is 3 out of 30 frames per second): http://flashflashrevolution.com
There are other games I'd like to see, but this is the only browser one. If you own Guitar Hero/Rock Band, those are notorious for gaping timing windows.
pikarceus (2013-03-15 10:30:58)I loved the platforming rhythm (Time window isn't so bad after playing Theatrhythm songs on Ultimate difficulty), but that Bumblebee boss sucked.
Dragnet (2013-03-15 10:43:37)Yes, if you've played another rhythm game on an extreme difficulty, it's not bad, but what of the more casual players who want to pick up the game and play it without any rhythm gaming experience? A small time window is quite bothersome to such players. That's the problem.
What I wanna know is where's the caveman
THaT1GuY9001 (2013-03-15 11:06:59)After beating all the Ultimate rank battle music on theaterythm, I found this a bit hard to grasp at first, but it became easy afterwards. Though, its a bit unfair sometimes.

Green_plesioth (2013-03-16 04:42:15)It took me a whole DAY before i got the +Control Pad part's timing down path
manster hanter scrubs
WiiGi (2013-04-17 17:05:50)This is a decent game.

Song_Of_Storms (2013-06-12 03:44:13)I never managed to beat the bee boss in the demo, but in opinion, this game pales in comparison to FFTheatrythm.

I downloaded the demo of HarmoKnight expecting a great game, and got mediocre results.
First off, after a Jump, Attack, and Enemy tutorial, the game dumps you into the real gameplay, leaving you hanging regarding various things. One of the most important is the Jump-Attack combo, used to hit out-of-reach triangles and large cymbals. The tutorial doesn't discuss it at all. If you don't use this combo, you'll miss a lot of notes. That affects your score. How are you supposed to use it if you know nothing about it?
Another thing that seemed obvious was cruelly small window of time between hit and miss. I, being skilled in the art of tempo (though not exactly worthy of being called an expert), expected to dive right in and aim for a perfect score. I thought wrong. The game seems to detect inaccuracy to the slightest nanosecond, awarding you with an unsatisfactory bonk instead of a worthy smash when attacking enemies. This becomes especially apparent when fighting the boss. With the fast-paced action that goes on in the boss battle, you can't afford screwups, but that's just what you'll get. Repeatedly.
In fact, the boss you fight in the demo is apparently the SECOND boss, making it even harder.
What are your thoughts after playing the demo? Does HarmoKnight stay sharp, or does it fall flat?
