Monster Hunter producer Ryozo Tsujimoto on Gamereactor revealed that Monster Hunter 3: Ultimate online servers will be region-locked. Meaning if you you cant play with people outside you region.

3ds version only has local multiplayer

Exactly. It only has local, so this isn't an issue.

If I can handle no online, region-locked online doesn't bother me.

Sucks for people who are getting the Wii U version though, this could cause a lot of problems with gaming "friends" who are from other countries.
