Personally I got a plastic cover on my 3DS and it made it worse.

20 bucks, well where I live it does. And yes anything that can protect the 3DS is always a good idea, accidents happen.

I have the ScribbleNauts Unlimited Case it works pretty good. But you have to buy the game.
