"Most gamers fear the thought of a movie adaptation of their favorite video game. In the long, sad history of film adaptations, there have been few that have come close to even a minimal quality. Whether it’s from a poor translation of plot elements or just completely miserable casting, there is a certain stigma that stems from adapting a game into a full-length feature film – especially since most games these days take on narratives that far surpass some of Hollywood’s big budget flicks. No matter what, though, there will always be writers and directors in varying industries that are bold enough to think they can tackle these projects – one such person being Avi Arad, known best for his involvement in the past 20 years of Marvel comic book movies.
At the Metal Gear Solid 25 Year Anniversary conference, Arad confirmed that he would be attached to a Metal Gear Solid movie that is currently under production at Columbia Pictures. Arad, though he had no details to confirm or deny, states, “We will take our time and tell the story with all the nuances, ideology, cautionary tales needed.” Those that have played through the entirety of the Metal Gear Solid series are well aware of the sheer depth of the narrative. From the tale of Big Boss to the downfall of Liquid Ocelot, the Metal Gear Solid series alone (not even including the 1980’s Metal Gear) has well over three feature-length films worth of material to cover – so development for the film must be carefully played out as to not turn the intriguing story into an on-screen bore.
One of the bigger concerns with a feature film is capturing the personality traits and characteristics of the series main protagonist perfectly. Many fans of the series have come to know Solid Snake mostly for his signature voice. Portrayed by David Hayter in the game series, Snake’s voice is iconic in the gaming industry, and it almost seems impossible for the legendary soldier to exist without it. Could Hayter portray the silver screen version of the persona he helped create? It’s possible, but his hopes for a CGI Metal Gear movie in an interview with Game Informer in 2001 may be an indicator that Haytor may stick to simply voice acting the legendary soldier.
As a Metal Gear Solid movie has been a topic of conversation for over the past decade, there’s still room for this to fall out of place and back into non-existence. If the film does pick up and makes it to the silver screen, one can expect a series of films to follow – whether or not they will reach beyond the “straight to DVD” scope will be determined by the work put forth by the as-of-yet undecided film crew and cast."
