"An-Anna?" She stepped forward, letting the dark, murky water caress her unseen legs.
The silence crept closer and closer to her, swimming along with the dark clouds and the whisking breeze. The deep, sneaking depths rose from the eerie waves, pressing into the shaking girl's skin. Her hair was plastered to her dirty cheeks, running across her forehead like soggy streamers.
In the shadows, the girl froze in the cold waters as something began to rise along a sudden wave, only to dive down with a lurking splash. She looked up towards the area where the commotion had broke out.
"Anna? Was that you?" She stepped forward once more, but to her dismay stepped upon something soft, something indifferent.
The material beneath her toes quickly fled away along the waters, allowing the heels of her feet to meet the smooth sand. Her mind began to race, wondering what the slick material could have been. Her mind came to the conclusion the silky slither had been just a fish or a harmless lake eel, nothing more.
The darkness still swarmed her though. The waters pulled at the ruffles that lined her underwear gently, leaving goosebumps on her naked stomach. The smell of the sea grass and broken branches rose to tickle her nostrils, leaving behind a scented trail.
She stumbled upon her own feet, the currents pressing against her thighs, pushing her at an angle. The girl begin to think back to the week they arrived here, and how everything had went down. It has been a strangely quiet day, the grouping of college kids sitting eerie, quiet in the jeep as it strolled down the dirt path.
Anna had been whining, urging them to pull over and let her use the restroom. Matthew, the driver, finally pulled over, allowing everyone to get out. The day had been darkening, turning windy among the seconds.
Sooner than later, tiny drops of crystal liquid drew from the clouds, falling to the swampy earth below. Matthew had insisted they get back into the jeep and continue to drive.
They drove for about an hour on the path before the group realized the path was now disappearing, leading them into the deep vats of the forest. One of the girls to Anna's side continued to press Matthew on though, not wanting to backtrack.
That's where they made their mistake. In the mush and rain, the Jeep's wheels had quickly sunk into the damp earth, forcing them as captives to the forest.
The girl looked up from her thinking, taking another look around. She missed everybody, missed the feeling of being a careless, wild girl. Nobody was there anymore, though. She was even beginning to loose hopes on finding Anna, her best friend.
The group of college kids soon came to the conclusion sitting in the Jeep while it sunk into a mud hole wasn't safe. They all got out into the pouring raindrops, off deeper into the cavern of towering trees and broken branches.
The group wondered upon a slight opening, though surrounded by trees and cattail plants it seemed okay. There was a large lake in the middle of the opening, about a mile long once they examined the banks. The rain had ceased to a gentle flow, the sky growing darker along with night.
Matthew was the first to go.
Off the dock he went, before anybody could stop the unseen force. Everyone flinched as the water bubbled, crimson floating to the top in streamers like oil stains.
That was when the group realized they were trapped. Their only water source being the thing that scared them the most. Escape was impossible; survival, although vital, was implausible.
The girl jumped, opening her eyes to meet the darkness once more between her conscious dreaming. The unrecognizable sound of waves unnaturally meeting each other alerted her. She stood stiff, beginning to back up- her feet moving close together.
Her toes began to sink into the soft sand below, dragging her deeper into the current. The wind picked up, only to push her a bit further into the depths, the sand pulling down her ankles. Struggling wouldn't work, for she did so and it only pushed her deeper into the liquid foundation.
That was when it found her. The slither, the scales, the ease of the currents seemed all too familiar. No quicker than a blink, her body was swiftly dragged under the blanket of dark lake water. The waters surrounded her, the scales pushing farther up her body, a slither around her neck.
She disappeared, forever. No thrashing, no fighting, no will. Just a quick splash and an invisible blood stream, then a fulfilled source beneath the waters, hiding in the depths.
Shallow Creek didn't seem that shallow anymore.
