Moderator and newsposter are completely different, as are the methods of becoming one.

With a mod: You can't ask to become one, just stand out as a user and hope Robdeprop sees something in you.

With a newsposter you have to show Robdeprop you have the ability to make good reviews, and you should ask, or else he won't know you want to become one.

There are only three newsposters but there are a dozen mods.
You definitely have a better shot at newsposter, but it can take months of effort to become one.

But you missed the point: It isn't a newsposters job to critique reviews, it's their job to post news and reviews. We just critique reviews because many people that make them are attempting to become a newsposter. If they have good chances, we tell them that. If their review was complete crap, we tell them that as well.
