I know that on one of the trading cards or something it says that the parents automatically know what to name them through magic or something, but it's up to whomever to decide whether they believe those as canon or not. A while ago, my theory was that ponies have given names like human names, but that either they have "true names" that come to them when they get their cutie mark, or their name changes to fit their talent.
