He has to 'click' for you to understand. Play some Street Fighter, then try your hand at Tekken, DoA and MK. Finally, come back and play as Shulk.
The mistake EVERYONE makes is that they only see a downside to each change. 'Smash makes me easier to Launch', therefore people won't use that mode. So they stay in normal mode and never use neutral Special.

What you Should do:
Use speed and jump to get around the stage,such as from platform to platform, or to dash away from a slow charging attack.
Use shield before you get combo'd/grabbed/wombo'd/smashed/final smashed/etc.
Switch to buster after you dash behind someone for an empowered Bslash. However, if you are not fleeing or getting beaten up, stay in buster most of the time.

Go into smash mode ONLY if your % is low and their's in high: if they launch you and you have a high %, that's it. Your smash potential is drastically increased, so do a quick Up smash to knock them into the air in preparation for a fully charged Up, Side or Down smash, which will hit them while they are coming down.

Take note: Do not ignore the weaknesses: instead, combo your abilities. So if your are using shield, use speed afterwards to make up for lost distance traveled, and vice-versa.
YOU CAN USE BACK SLASH TO JUMP OVER SOME PROJECTILES.
YOU CAN ALSO USE AIR BACK SLASH TO GET BACK DOWN TO THE GROUND IF LAUNCHED STRAIGHT UP.

@BirdSatan, jump is not useless.
Think about Brawl stages (if you played it).
Some of the melee stages were quite tall, and even some of the normal stages could be a pain to navigate. Don't get me started on some custom stages.
However, please note that not only does jumping increase your jump range, it increases the height you gain from Air Slash. So if you got knocked off, just activate jump and jump-jump-Up special-Up special and you're good!
Now tell me: how is it useless if it can SAVE YOUR LIFE?

Jump is useless. You'll already be dead by the time you activate Jump to recover; the animation can't be cancelled when you're in the air. Also, Shulk's normal stats are good enough for traveling through stages, even if they aren't that great.
