It actually looks pretty similar to the 2D. CG moves a lot more smoothly so there's no reason not to use it. The 2D parts are still in there too. Amd for effects, don't forget that μ's first performance of Start Dash was pretty effectless too. That's obviously because it's their first performance, almost entirely handmade by a few high school girls. In the original Love Live you can see the difference between μ's first performance of Start Dash and their performance of Kira Kira Sensation at the end of the second season. As they got more popular, better effects were used. The same thing is going to happen in Sunshine when they inevitably make it to Love Live. It's completely canon/lore consistent. It's world building. Detail. The works.
Also, Sunshine is leagues ahead of the first Love Live in terms of quality. Be it in animation, story progression, or character development, Sunshine is already better than the first Love Live. I haven't quite warmed up to the characters yet though. Their constant obvious nods to the original cast through Sunshine's is kind of annoying and honestly the only thing keeping me from completely enjoying Sunshine right now.
