Recently Reggie Fils-Aime, President of Nintendo America, spoke with IGN on why they decided to make the Nintendo 2DS. Here is his statement:

“We’re always thinking about what we can do that’s new, unique, different, and brings more people into this category that we love. And so with the Nintendo 3DS, we were clear to parents that, ‘hey, we recommend that your children be seven and older to utilize this device.’ So clearly that creates an opportunity for five-year-olds, six-year-olds, that first-time handheld gaming consumer.”

“We’ve always been thinking about, ‘how do we approach that as one target?’ And that certainly helped spur the idea of the Nintendo 2DS. Let’s have the consumer have access to all of these great games – Mario Kart 7, Animal Crossing – but do it in a 2D capability with a device that has a dramatically lower price point. That’s just an example of how we’re always thinking about, ‘how do we get more people playing games? How do we get more people playing Nintendo games?’”

But what kind of 7 and under year old would play video games? If you do have a 3DS then don't get it.

If you don't then i'll recommend it since you don't notice the 3D on the "3D"S because you're too busy focusing on your game.

And I'll move this to Gaming because it's not REALLY a 3DS.

i was wondering where the topic went anyways believe it or not it's part of the 3DS family. Also i have a sister who is 6 that plays my DS and 3DS. I always see little kids who look younger than my sister asking for DS/3DS games from their parents at walmart.

ill just copy what i had on my other topic:

Before you rage and say stuff like "WTF is wrong with Nintendo!" or "Whats the point of this" think about it for a minute logically. This handheld is clearly marketed to the younger kids and to the people who didn't buy a 3DS because of its "3D" feature. Now those people can buy a 3DS. Its the perfect handheld for those little kids who still have a DS because of its really low price. Even the design is pretty smart for them since knowing how my sister is with my DSI XL she always likes closing it with a lot of force. Whats also great is the timing it's comming out which is the same day Pokemon X and Y launch. Many Parents will be buying the 3DS for the fist time for their children just for this game and at the price they are going to sell it at will be quite a lot. This is a pretty good response to PS Vita's recent price drop.

One thing I will agree with for the majority of you is the design of the handheld and how bad it looks. The handheld looks like it would be uncomfortable to use since how flat it is. Another thing is how big it is now that it looks like it's not portable at all. The naming is also an issue since i feel like people whi are not familiar with gamming will now the difference between this and the 3DS. They might confuse it with a new handheld or something. Nonetheless i plan on buying one once my sister starts bothering me that she wants a 3DS.

Actually, you're right. If 7 year olds and other DO play video games, then this'll be the perfect system so you could play good 3DS games in 2D like ACNL, KIU, etc.

And yes, I like it how it doesn't close making it non-breakable ( not really ).

Although, some games on the 3DS does not look good without 3D.


Oh yeah, and are they still gonna have "3D classics" and "Flipnote 3D" on the 2DS and re-naming it 2D classics and Flipnote 2D? Just asking.

I was thinking about buying the 2DS for my little bro. I'm sick of him deleting my games and data from my 3DS. He has the DSi, but he really wants a 3DS, so the 2DS is a perfect Christmas gift for him.

Hope they make an updated clamshell version, just for people that want something that looks like a 3DS, but not the $100 extra for the 3D. If they did that, I'd rather get that rather than fixing my 3DS.

Making this for children under the age of 7 is just very unnecessary. In the 3DS settings you can disable 3D settings.
But, if you have sight problems, you don't have to pay $100 for a 3D-effect you can't see anyway.

Parents rather not have that at all. For anyone still can't learn to accept 2DS and its comming and you can't change it, read this cause it basically answer all the complaints.

I don't need really need a realiable source to prove that 2DS is a good move (financially speaking) since it is just common sense to try cover as much demographics as possible in a market in order to get more sales.

unfortunately you lack all.
